Ballistic:

Ballistics is a futuristic racing video game created by Grin and published by Xicat Interactive in 2001. Grin developed an arcade edition of the game in 2002, featuring a unique reclined seating cabinet by Triotech. In Ballistics, players compete on high-speed hoverbikes across seven distinct tracks in various leagues.

This game marked Grin's first release and featured the initial version of their Diesel game engine. Grin collaborated closely with NVIDIA to integrate new technologies into the game, positioning it as one of the showcase titles for the GeForce 3 Series of graphics cards.

Reviews for the game were mixed, with critics praising the stunning graphics and exhilarating sense of speed but expressing slight disappointment with the gameplay's lack of depth. A newer iteration of the arcade game in 2003 incorporated motion simulator technology into the arcade cabinet.

Set in the year 2090, Ballistics revolves around a fictional extreme racing sport known as Ballistics, evolved from Formula One. Players step into the role of a Ballistics pilot, racing specialized hoverbikes called speeders within enclosed tube-like tracks. Speeders are magnetically attached to the race surface, allowing full 360-degree movement along the left/right axis. Players can detach the speeder from the track to navigate down the center, avoiding track obstacles and collecting power-ups located exclusively in that area. Players must skillfully navigate the outer curves to prevent involuntary detachment, which leads to loss of control and time.

Managing heat levels on the speeder is crucial, as overheating can lead to explosions. Heat accumulates through acceleration and collisions, and players can activate an onboard cooler to mitigate heat, albeit at the cost of reduced speed. Cooling strips on the track and the Ice power-up offer heat relief without speed penalties.

Speeders feature a boost meter, indicating available fuel for the onboard speed boost. While the boost provides superior speed and acceleration compared to the standard throttle, it also increases heat levels. Designated booster load zones on the track replenish the meter, and a super boost power-up doubles the boost's potency.

Development:

Players earn cash by achieving high speeds, securing top positions in races, and acquiring the Flip-Score power-up. Cash can be spent between races to enhance their speeders by purchasing various parts, including chassis, coolers, engines, and front shields, each influencing the speeder differently. Certain tracks may favor specific setups.

The game includes seven tracks inspired by locations worldwide, from Belize to Tokyo. Progression involves competing and winning races against computer-controlled opponents across different tracks and leagues. Players start in the Rookie league, where the chances of detachment are reduced, and acceleration rates are slower. Advancing to the Pro league unlocks more tracks, while the most challenging league, the Ballistics league, requires first-place finishes in every race to complete.

Success in Ballistics hinges on memorizing track layouts, quick reflexes, managing heat and boost levels, and selecting the right speeder setup for each track. The game is lauded for its emphasis on speed, with players reaching speeds exceeding Mach 3 based on their skills. At such velocities, visuals and audio distort, creating an experience reminiscent of the psychedelic vortex sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Ballistics supports multiplayer gameplay for up to eight players over LAN or the internet.

Ballistics was Grin's inaugural game, completed swiftly in just six months due to meticulous planning and production methods. It was finalized even before securing a distribution partner. Grin employed Total Quality Management (TQM) techniques to uphold work quality and Just-In-Time (JIT) methods to ensure synchronization of production phases.

The primary inspiration for the game was Formula One, with Grin aiming to replicate the sensation of speed witnessed through in-car cameras. To convey the speed effectively on screen, the track was reimagined as a tunnel, enabling the entire screen to serve as a reference point. Coupled with outdoor scenes, this design allowed Grin to create a comprehensive simulation of speed. Game settings drew inspiration from various sources, with city tracks inspired by films like "Blade Runner" and "The Fifth Element," while others took cues from natural settings like the Amazon Rainforest and Siberian snowscapes. Ballistics drew from futuristic racing games like WipEout and Rollcage, pushing the boundaries with high-end graphics.

The game employed the Diesel Engine as its graphics engine, chosen for its flexibility and scalability, compatible with Windows and Xbox platforms. Based on DirectX, the engine facilitated easy integration of new features. Grin worked closely with NVIDIA, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like pixel and vertex shaders for rendering complex scenes. NVIDIA marketed Ballistics as a flagship title for their GeForce 3 graphics cards, bundling the game with various versions of the GeForce 3, and distribution was handled by Interplay OEM. Subsequent versions of the Diesel Engine powered other Grin games, such as the Windows release of "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter."

Now, here are five key features of the game "Ballistic":

  1. Futuristic Hoverbike Racing: Ballistics offers a thrilling experience of high-speed racing on hoverbikes set in a futuristic world.
  2. Immersive Graphics: The game boasts stunning graphics and effects, showcasing the sensation of speed, especially at extreme velocities.
  3. Heat and Boost Management: Players must monitor their speeders' heat levels, manage boost usage strategically, and use cooling strips and power-ups to stay in control.
  4. Track Variety: With seven tracks inspired by global locations, from tropical Belize to bustling Tokyo, players can enjoy diverse and visually striking racing environments.
  5. Upgrade and Customization: Earn cash to enhance speeders by purchasing various parts, each affecting performance differently, and find the optimal setup for different tracks and racing challenges.
